In recent years, there has been increased activity in process synthesis, particularly in the development of heat exchanger networks and distillation trains. Various chapters describe and develop these and other areas of interest. In particular, note is made of the need to select appropriate unit operations for given process tasks. Traditional manual methods of material and heat balancing introduce the computerised methods used in flowsheeting programs.
