This is a hundred year old story about murders in a tiny town in Hungary. The medical and criminal investigation is similar to what would occur today, though with better technology. Also similar to modern times is the locals distrust and disappointment in the officials involved. I gave 3 stars due to the author's fascination with fatness and over use of words describing it. I didn't know there were so many ways to describe that. There are 300+ pages in the book and 600+ (at least!) words & phrases telling us how fat and waddling the midwife was. There was also a lot of detail that failed to move the story forward. Maybe McCracken was trying to set the atmosphere but she states she had to assume or imagine some events and conversations. This is non-fiction; I would have preferred a more factual approach. And, to belabor the point, would have preferred a less insulting approach to describing the women.
Women in that era, and in that village had little recourse if they were abused (beaten with a chain in one case!) or were unable provide for the children they gave birth to. I found myself feeling sympathy, along with horror.
