The first fifteen lessons present simple words, in a form that may be used in composition, and. In connection with these words, models for sentences are given. But the work of the pupil should be to make original sentences, simply using those given as guides. And each of the pupil's expressions must represent an idea of his own. On no account should he be allowed to copy from the book either the thought or the expression. Ne models are given after the fifteenth lesson, but the practice of sentence-making must be continued the same as before. The teacher should insist upon originality in every sentence, and also upon accuracy in thought and expression. Let nothing be stated as true which the pupil does not know to be so, and, when the statement is made, let it set forth precisely what is meant, - not something near it; and let the language need be good, terse, elegant English. In respect to all material objects the pupil's knowledge should come from the careful use of his own senses and generally, as far as may be, from his own experience. The practice of requiring this will lead him to be thorough in the use of his observing powers and in the analysis of his own thoughts. If the particular object under consideration is not within reach of the pupil's observation, let him use the ideas acquired from his study of similar objects which are familiar to him, as a.
