Excerpt from The American Anti-Slavery Almanac, for 1843: Being the Third After Bissextile, or Leap Year; And Until July 4th, the Sixty-Seventh of the Independence of the United States He was ever ready in every good word and work; With his own hands he saved twelve persons from drowning; for which he received a handsome diplo ma from the Humane Society of Philadelphia. He was a a sail-maker. Being once requested to rig a ship engaged in the' slave trade, he indignantly refused; considering the request an insult. He took an active part in the Revolutionary War, and in 1780 fell into the hands of the enemy, while serving in the Royal Louis, under the father of the celebrated Decatur. He was extremely hospitable to strangers, who were invariably interested in his agreeable conversation and polished manners. His funeral, one of the largest ever seen in Philadelphia, was attended by thousands, of all classes and complexions, including many merchants, ship pers, and sea-captains, who had known and respected him for years.
