?Hysterical, laugh-out-loud funny take off of a atheist who decides to start a church and what could very happen in our culture today.?
Ryan Fisher is a ambitious Real Estate agent looking for his big break. Full of youthful (almost juvenile) confidence, he decides to tap into the niche market after discovering the number of Americans that consider themselves ?Christian? ? 80 million.
He sets his mind to become one of these ?Christians? and begins a life of fabrications , deceit and manipulation that astounds the mind. Did I mention that Ryan Fisher doesn?t even believe in God?
Reading this story reminded me of the old black and white movie ?The Secret Life of Walter Mitty? (I had recently seen that movie on one of the classic channels). A hilarious movie and one I would recommend.
If you haven?t seen that movie, just imagine a almost simple minded man with a wild imagination. One that leads him into some very creative situations. Such is the case with Ryan Fisher.
Tapping in on all the cultural idiosyncrasies of Christianity today, and leaving you laughing long after you finished the book, Rob Stennett weaves a story that could very well happen in our culture today. Sad but true.
He researches the popular churches and pastors and dreams of being a pastor himself. He convinces his music groupie wife to go along with the plan and they pack their bags and head for Bartlesville, Oklahoma to start a church. Whats more is that Ryan and his wife become successful using feel good techniques that would rival Oprah.
For the seasoned Christian (by that I mean one who has come to grips with his own wicked heart and knows the continual struggle), this is a very funny book.
For the new Christian (by this I mean one who has embraced forgiveness and all the joy that comes with it but not yet faced the life altering trials that cause one to question everything), I am not so sure this is a good selection ? only because it may confuse. Then again, this book may stir further bible study in an attempt to understand the cultural traditions of todays? society.
All in all a very enjoyable, hilarious read. I look forward to reading more of Rob Stennett?s work.
