Why do men and women act the way they do? Dr. Crenshaw decided to take an intense look at the differences in behavior that result from the hormones we all carry within our bodies. Her results are surprising and absorbing and not too technical; the layman can easily decipher her ideas and the conclusions she comes to in this novel.
Like any good scientist, she searches out examples and probes other experts to learn their observations and knowledge concerning her chosen field. One of the things she tried to debunk was the idea that PMS was purely psychological.
Excerpt:
My interest in hormones and sexuality came about naturally in the course of my work. Human sexuality did not appear on my medical school curriculum, nor did the majority of medical schools across the country offer any such courses. I was struck by the neglect of this important arena of the human condition? I decided to get some training in it, no matter what I ultimately decided to choose as my specialty.
[T]he zookeepers who handled the animals on a daily basis, and knew them as well as a parent knows a child, had a lot to say about premenstrual monkey business. One handler?s story tells it all: ?I know when she?s coming into estrus without even checking the charts or her daily weights? She?s usually tame, cooperative and affectionate? However, just before estrus she starts chattering at her mate, scolding her young, and causing a general ruckus. Her infant cringes in terror, her mate keeps his distance, and so do I. Once she got loose from me, tore up the lab, and did this.? He held up his right hand. The middle finger had been bitten off. ?The rest of the month she?s a pussycat,? he added.
