As soon as the engine starts, advance the magneto and open the battery knife switch on the dash. Starting with Hand Crank.--When the electric starter is out of commission the procedure is as follows. The right hand magneto is connected to the middle point of the 12-volt battery, thereby furnishing 6 volts for use in starting with battery current. When the magneto advance and retard lever is fully retarded, connection is made by a switch incorporated in the magneto itself so that battery current passes through the coil in the magneto. In the fully retarded position, the spark occurs in the cylinder after the piston has passed over the top center on the firing stroke. Therefore, if the engine is cranked by hand with the magneto fully retarded, it will start on the ignition furnished by the battery and the coil in the magneto. The procedure is as follows: 1. Set the throttle in the closed or starting position. 2. With the Curtiss ignition switch in the "OFF" position, crank the engine with the hand crank until six cylinders have drawn in a charge of gas. 3. Disengage the hand crank from the engine. 4. Retard the magneto fully. 5. Put the Curtiss ignition switch "ON." 6. CAUTION.--Do not "rock" the engine when cranking. Always keep cranking clockwise, or ahead. Never allow it to rotate back or anti-clockwise. 7. Crank the engine over one cylinder and it should start. Repeat if necessary. CAUTION.--Always have the magnetos fully retarded when cranking either with the electric starter or hand crank. Never leave the magnetos in the fully retarded position either when the engine is...
