Every miner contributes to the Provident Fund, giving relief after accident, or compensation to the family in case of death by accident. Insurance agencies are much used; the worse the times, the more regular the payments. The large Benefit Societies giving relief in sickness have many members. Public-house clubs are numerous, and though not an unmixed good are an effort to provide for sickness, Ac. Many save money and invest it in cottages or "securities." Lack of P.O. facilities largely prevents the use of the P.O. Savings Bank, and higher interest is desired. The number of local victims in the "Liberator" crash was large, the thrifty having been induced to invest by a Baptist preacher acting as agent. Children help with much willingness; where they contribute a fixed sum through the Guardians, this by no means always represents the full amount of help given; relatives not legally liable also assist; the tie of kinship is very strong in the district. Those not in receipt of relief are also often helped, in some cases by regular allowances, but it is difficult to find out the amount. Church, Chapel, And Organized Charity. Very little organized help. Kindness is shown or help given by Church and Chapel in cases of special need. In one or two parishes charities do something. These charities are somewhat intermittent and uncertain in their help. Churches and Chapels alike find it hard to get funds to cope with the needs of an increasing population, and little help can be given the poor. Exceptional distress rouses special sympathy. A charitable bequest (now 05 a year from rent of land), for relief of the poor not on the rates, ...
