This work studies the Agaria tribe of iron-smelters and blacksmiths found in Central India. Elwin shows that though the Agaria share customs and habits with other tribes, they have a highly developed totemic civilization with its own distinctive mythology affecting every aspect of life. Elwin also scrutinizes the history, demographics, magic, and economy in order to provide an analysis of the richness of the craft and culture of this slowly decaying society.
