Contributors included, among many others, John Hawkesworth and Samuel Johnson. During the course of one year starting in March 1753, Dr. Johnson contributed 29 essays to Hawkesworth's periodical "The Adventurer, " which was written in imitation of another popular periodical, "The Rambler."

Not Stated. Very Good Indeed. An illustrated new edition of Hawkesworth and Johnson's influential Georgian newspaper 'The Adventurer'. In three volumes of four, lacking volume four. 'The Adventurer' was a notable biweekly newspaper published in the eighteenth century, with prominent contributors including John Hawkesworth and Samuel Johnson. Â The newspaper was originally published in 140 numbers from the 7th November 1752 to the 9th March 1754. This three volume sets contain 105 of the numbers, up to the 6th November 1753. These 105 essays are massively diverse in subjects, ruminating on many prominent issues and ideas in Georgian England. Essays include 'Courage, why honoured as a virtue', 'The influence of infidelity upon moral conduct', 'Proposals to improve the dramatic entertainment of the animal comedias', 'Observations on the Odyssey of Homer', 'The life of Agamus, an old debauchee', 'Apology for apparent plagiarism', 'Blemishes in the Paradise Lost', and more. Johnson originated 'The Adventurer' after the conclusion of 'The Rambler' in 1752. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, engraved title page, and two plates. Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece, engraved title page, and two plates. Volume III illustrated with a frontispiece, engraved title page, and two plates.
