Based upon a true story, The Achilles Effect chronicles God experiencing life through Mike as a gay man. Even before the deadly car wreck he barely survived, he was one with God. He had asked God to introduce his Son Jesus to him at an early age. Jesus was big in Mike's life. He lived within him -- not on his sleeve. Even prior to his 3-week coma, people had encouraged Mike to write a book about coming out as a gay airplane mechanic. In 1992, gay employees did not have equal protection under the law; they could have been fired for admitting a homosexual orientation. Although he grew up Catholic, neither Mike's parents nor his siblings put the beliefs of the church above the love for their family. Several denominations have closed their doors to practicing homosexuals, referring to the behavior as a choice. Some priests have even denied communion to those who support the gay movement. Fundamentalist Christians brought to the workplace their misconception of the gay population as sick, immoral people in need of saving. This bullying left Mike with only three choices: 1. Quit his career. 2. Go back to drinking. 3. Challenge Northwest Airlines to take a stand against the bigotry that ran rampant, not only out in the hangars, but throughout the entire corporation as well. As a direct result of Mike's efforts, Northwest Airlines became the first large domestic air carrier to join the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association in 1994 which changed aviation history. Join Michael in exploring the issues of growing up as a gay Catholic. While categorized as fiction, our book is based on true-life experiences to bring out more issues facing the gay community. Michael's walk during his journey with God and Jesus is an experience of mystery, uncertainty, faith, and a tug-of-war between religion and God's Spirit. So much in organized religion has very little to do with God. Michael experienced the unconditional love of God, which he found in the value of God's permissive love as Michael gained favor in finding the truth of God which lives within us all. Before creating man, God could only imagine what true love was. The authors' goal is to help you remember who you are. Accepting your parents' feared-based religion as your concept of God is just a starting point into this final frontier of letting God experience life through you. We are not our religion. We are more than that. We are Spirit -- an energy through which God can experience life, love, joy, and peace, as well as the human hate, anxiety, and fear. All the things heaven and hell represent, we can experience on earth as well.
