You can enjoy this story even if you do not believe this story is true. Bud said it was not an adventure for him at first because of the danger he faced in never returning home. But it came to be an adventure as he grew older and relived it in his memory. His adventure can be your adventure if it is only in your imagination and you don't really believe that all this happened to him.
