Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" is a short-short with a punch ending -- it stands as a deserved classic.. "The Lottery" is another tale that gets to the point quickly, although what point that is is controversial, a characteristic which adds to its charm?! Shirley Jackson up to now remains an under-appreciated writer of seemingly everyday situations coated in layers of horror (Stephen King does this, although with differing results). Her imagination is boundless. Oliver Onions's "The Beckoning Fair One" is, like Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper", a study of the soul's decay. Beyond this accidential synchronicity the two stories diverge. All was well until the drinking of "Green Tea" became a habit. J. Sheridan LeFanu's imagination and lightness of presentation carry this story to its inexorable conclusion. Arther Machen's "The Great God Pan" will give the unwary -- and the wary -- the creeps. Then there is the antiquarian M.R. James's "Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad", which could have, under different circumstances provided comic relief; but not so here. What can be said about Blackwood's "The Willows"? It is considered by horror connoisseurs to be one of the best horror offerings, ever!
All compositions in this anthology are well written (of course, or we would not have rated them so highly) and literate stories that sometimes meander, but to a point, and without flagging the reader's interest. All are masterpieces of the genre, and all deserve an even longer literary life and a wider contemporary readership because, for those who like to be scared, they scare.
