That Went Well was the best book I have read regarding the subject of caring for a "disabled" sibling. Her story resonated with every fiber of my being. I am a sister who is caring for a disabled brother, along with our aging parents. We are members of the ARC here in Macomb County, Michigan and thank God for such organizations. My brother is currently 44 years old, with low IQ and other emotional, mental and health issues. He lives with my parents and it was such a relief to read the "Irene" stories- I live some of those exact same stories. I thought I was the only one with such extraordinary sibling stories. One of my favorite lines in this book is something like "In the end, the sibling usually gets what they want. They wear down your resistance until you end up exhausted and they finally get what they wanted in the first place"--- This book helped save my relationship with my brother. Hands down one of the best non-fiction books I've ever read. Thank you Ms. Dougan for the combination of humor, diginity and grace in your writing of life with people that have disabilities.
