David Rex Garner, also known by his friends as "Cappy," lived in Texas for most of his life. He was a fireman for five years before he worked his way from an emergency technician to a paramedic in 1979. He worked for sixteen years as a paramedic in rural south Texas, the setting for this book. Working for the Council of Governments, he established more than eight emergency medical programs in small towns, and taught more than 2,000 people the skills needed to operate an ambulance in the state of Texas. He taught twice that number the guidelines and mechanics of CPR using the American Heart Association standards. Margie Littell Ulrich is a clinical audiologist and owns the Better Hearing Center in Dayton, Tennessee. This book, full of vivid, true stories and interactions of the many medics, doctors and law enforcement officers, creates a roller coaster of emotions. For story continuity, David Rex Garner placed himself into many of these situations. He had to change some of the participants' names for their protection, and in some instances, changed his name. Each story really did happen, with many more stories going untold due to writer fatigue. His job made him confront the best in people and the worst in people. In an ongoing debate with his editor Margie, many profanities shouted in the heat of the emergency were deleted as to not offend the readers.
