The first duo album by Happy & Artie Traum in several years -- the brothers have mostly been pursuing their respective solo careers since the '80s -- 1993's The Test of Time is a charmingly low-key selection of tunes pairing the brothers' similar voices and chiming acoustic guitars with subtle, non-obtrusive backing by the cream of the Woodstock folk scene, including John Sebastian, Bela Fleck, and three members of the re-formed '90s version of the Band: Rick Danko, Jim Weider, and Richard Bell. (Though he doesn't appear on the album, Levon Helm did write the liner notes.) The album's contents are the usual mix of originals and covers, and as always, the covers tend to be the best songs on the album. The Traums are excellent singers and instrumentalists, but their songs have always been a dicey proposition; for every song like Happy's touching tribute to Mississippi John Hurt, there's another like the somewhat overwrought "Secret in the Wind." Much better are their takes on Bob Dylan's "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry," Tom Waits' surprisingly apropos "The Heart of Saturday Night," and best of all, a take on the standard "Betty and Dupree" modeled after Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee's definitive version. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi
