"Albright contends that Tennyson's ``aesthetic goals were . . . in conflict'' and that his poetry attempts to ``unite two incompatible poetics, '' one governed by a heavenly muse, the other by an earthly muse suspicious of the idealizations and abstractions held dear by the first.
