For a country which claims to be both democratic and free the USA really does have a shameful history. Just one of those episodes is illustrated in this sad, and moving, book which details the lives of those decent people in Hollywood who were jailed or ostracised or prevented from working, simply because they had, or were simply suspected of having, progressive political views.
It really should be mandatory reading for Americans to show what happens when their periodic paranoia about peoples, religions or politics, is allowed to take hold.

The 50s Were Not Fabulous
In this wonderful volume of first-hand accounts, blacklisted writers and producers discuss McCarthyism's effect on their lives and careers. Yes, it CAN and DOES happen here. This book reminds us of Jefferson's edict: 'The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.' There are always fearmongering witch-hunters ready and willing to deep-six the Constitution for political gain. Read this book: Those ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it.
