This is a mystery novel co-starring Philip Marlowe. He is not the main attraction. Conteris begins with a fun idea: Marlowe and his creator Raymond Chandler operate in the same world, know each other, and interact as part of a murder investigation. But instead of really slicing into this, Conteris uses this platform for his not-very-subtle political perspective. All well and good, but he also makes characters act out of character (most significantly Nulty) and, as an homage to Chandler, reuses character names from other Marlowe novels for entirely different characters. This only serves to disorient readers familiar with Chandler's work. On the positive side, he includes rather lengthy passages in which writers discuss writing - which is entertaining but bogs down the story. What is missing is the soul of Marlowe, his pain, his disappointment in life, and his still unbroken spirit that makes him try to knock down windmills. The ending leaves an acid taste for any reader of Marlowe tales. Worth a read as a curiosity, but I felt it was a disappointing tangent that is not in the spirit of Chandler.
