This book is the story of how Owens recorded folksongs in Texas during the 1930s. It commences during his time as an undergraduate at SMU and ends in 1941, when he received his doctorate from the university of Iowa. It follows Owens' two previous volumes of autobiography, "This Stubborn Soil" and "A Season of Weathering." Readers who enjoyed those volumes should not expect a seamless narrative continuation in the present work. Instead, Owens divided up his telling of this decade not chronologically, but by ethnic group of the subjects he recorded. He does offer autobiographic vignettes and interesting stories of the circumstances involved in the finding and recording of folk singers. More than half the work is technical discussion of the possible origins of the songs, as well as the texts and scores of the songs themselves. Hence, this book would appeal only to mid-south folklore specialists and those determined students of Owens' life who have a lot of patience. The reader wishing to reconstruct the story will have to skip and flip back and forth. It is not recommended for those wishing a continuous narrative.
