Seller's Description:
Not Stated. Good. A very scarce first edition of this privately circulated memoir celebrating the life of Teena Rochfort-Smith, illustrated with four woodburytypes. The first edition of this work. A very scarce work. Printed for private circulation. Presentation slip tipped on to the front endpaper, 'Mr. Furnivall asks the favour of your accepting this Memoir, and giving a quarter of an hour to rear it'. Presented to the Bristol University Library, with their labels to the front pastedown. A memoir on the life of Teena Rochfort-Smith, published upon her early death at the age of twenty-one in 1883. Rochfort-Smith was a Victorian Shakespearean scholar, noted for her contributions to the form of the scholarly edition. However her early death meant that she didn't fully realise her scholarly ability. Illustrated with four woodbury-types.  Woodburytype is a printing process, producing high quality continuous tone images in monochrome, a similar tonal range to a Carbon print. The process was introduced by Walter B. Woodbury. With memorial lines by Mary Grace Walker. In the original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Institutional ink to the head of the front board. A few minor marks to the boards and spine. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Front hinge is starting but firm. Front endpaper and front free endpaper are detached but present. Internally, generally firmly bound, the title page and first plate are detached but present. Pages are bright and clean with a couple of very light spots. Good.
