The sound is clean, and one wonders in exactly what sense the recording was "live," given that there isn't a trace of applause or any other audience noise. The LSO sound terrific, and one is impressed anew with the large variety of music in which this orchestra, and Noseda, too, display complete mastery. It's also true that both works here are played and recorded tremendously often, and little new ground is being trod. The performance of the Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36, is of the reined-in sort, with little reflection of the freak-out going on in Tchaikovsky's life at the time, to which he himself made reference when discussing the work's meaning with his correspondent, confidante, and patroness Nadezhda von Meck.
