Dvorák was the first to compose his serenade after winning a competition that none other than Tchaikovsky was judging. The junior Dvorák in turn made a gift of the serenade score to Tchaikovsky, who was undoubtedly influenced when he composed his string serenade only five years later. The most junior member of the trio represented on this CD, Josef Suk, had as his composition instructor at the Prague Conservatoire Antonin Dvorák, who again influenced the composition of another string serenade. The LCO's performance of these three works is highly desirable in almost every way. The ensemble is quite energetic and music director Christopher Warren-Green pushes many of the tempos much faster than many other recordings in memory...
