Ballets. There remain Tchaikovsky's ballets, three in number. They all belong to the domain of fairyland, which is always a happy background for a ballet. Before proceeding, we must point out that the ballet occupies a totally different position in Russia to that which it holds here. We have mentioned the three companies at Moscow, occupying themselves respectively with opera, ballet, and the drama, but it should further be pointed out that the standing popularly accorded them was about equal. It was in no way considered more derogatory to the dignity of a composer to busy himself with the production of a good ballet, than to devote his energies to opera. The audience also was as keen a judge of one as of the other, and the music of a Russian ballet had to be of a quality which renders any comparison with the ballet music tolerated in England impossible. The production of a new ballet in St Petersburg is as important an event in its way as the production of a new opera. In some cases it becomes a state function. It is therefore not surprising that many of the greatest of the Russian composers have contributed to this branch of music. Rubinstein, for instance, has written a ballet entitled "The Vine," which is still well known in Russia. Amongst the younger composers we have Glazounov, with three ballets to his credit, of which one, "Raymonda," promises to become a classic.
