If I told my dad a lie as a young kid or teenager, he would wallop my backside. However, if I began to spin a big-o-whopper of a tall tale, he would laugh, load me up in the car, and take me over to the neighbor's house for entertainment. And then, he would take me home and wallop my backside. On occasion, Dad would tell me lies, but he called it storytelling or spinning a good yarn. I never did get to wallop his backside for all of his tall tales. Instead, I just smiled, listened, and marveled at his robust imagination. From these family activities - both walloped and un-walloped lying - I learned the fine mountaineer art of storytelling.
