The great stream of human life flows by, with its burden of business and of pleasure, without interfering with the humble folks who inhabit these streets. Like the little shallow pools of still water at the side of a rapid river, such persons may lead quiet lives in the midst of commotion, and may be little affected by what is passing within a stone's throw of their dwellings. They are conscious of the rushing of the current, but it does not disturb their peace. They find certain advantages from the neighbouring traffic; indeed their means of subsistence may depend very much upon it: yet in these out-of-the-way places, especially where there is no thoroughfare, they live pretty much as they like, in a little world of their own. Such a street is one which I will call Short-street, on account of the few houses it. contains; there are not more than ten or twelve on each side of the way, with no thoroughfare for carriages, but there is a foot-way, with posts across the entrance, which leads into another street at the back. The people in Short-street know each other by sight and mostly by name: they come out for a gossip on summer evenings: their children play together on the pavement, or even in the middle of the road, without fear of being run over: there are one or two shops where food and firing can be obtained in small quantities; indeed, the life of the people in Short-street in some respects resembles that of a country town rather than the usual life of Londoners. But there is this grand difference between the two--the air of Short-street is not pure like that of country towns, and the rents are much higher.
