It may seem strange for a history book, but Tales and Towns of Northern New Jersey offers a bit of an escape. It is a chance to travel back to simpler times, and that is because it is really two different histories.
The first are the different historic epochs Beck chronicles as he tracks down elusive stories of New Jersey's past. He takes us to a Lake Hopatcong crowded with steamboats and a West Orange that is home to a wooden toboggan run.
The second history is the mid-twentieth century in which Beck researched and wrote up these historic accounts. While Beck does lament the changes that have occurred even in his own time, it is still a far cry from the changes that have taken place in North Jersey since then.
Beck has a conversational, perhaps even meandering style of writing that makes this book all the more enjoyable. This book is a must-read for anyone with an interest in New Jersey history or a longing for simpler times.
