Science is mans attempt to know how the world works; philosophy is his attempt to know why. Scientific philosophy is the application of the techniques of science to the questions of philosophy. Systems theory, a term of varying usage, but one which I employ as a synonym for the cybernetics of W. Ross Ashby (1966a, b) presumes a scientific approach, but is a perspective rather than a branch of science: It is a sort of lens thru which the world may be viewed scientifically, and which brings into relief certain features such as input, output, state changes, feedback, selection, regulation, information, adaptation, evolution, and equilibrium which have special utility in organizing our perceptions and shaping our ideas. But irrespective of ones view on the relation of systems theory to science, it is my firm conviction that the application of systems theory to the problems of philosophy is an event of the greatest philosophical significance. Indeed, there are so many areas of philosophy where systems theory has important applications in the understanding of paranormal phenomena, in the elucidation of the artificial intelligence controversy, in the explanation of sexual mores, and in the interpretation of voting behavior, to mention just a few that I continue to be amazed that no one else besides myself seems to have bothered to spade this extremely fertile field. In this sense, then, the present book represents a very sharp departure from previous works in philosophy, and quite possibly heralds a genuine revolution in this most ancient of disciplines. In saying this, of course, I am setting myself up as a target for the scoffers and cynics who believe, like Ecclesiastes, that there is nothing new under the sun, and like Marie Antoinettes maid, that there is nothing new save whats been forgot. But I submit with the boldness that has characterized the three decades of my philosophical career that there really is something new here, and that if the scoffers and cynics will just put away their poison pens long enuf to read it, they will be genuinely surprised. And they should know that my confidence in the novelty and importance of the present work is based on something more than my own personal bias; for the insights of this book an earlier version of which was accepted for publication (but not actually published) by a large New York publisher almost two decades ago has provided the basis for numerous published works which have appeared since that time, among which is a short but vitally important book, The Most Powerful Idea Ever Discovered, which has won praise from many distinguished men, including the majority of a dozen professional philosophers who reviewed it.
