In my humble opinion, Augustus Hopkins Strong's "Systematic Theology" would make an excellent addition to the library of any theology student, pastor, or Christian worker. I have regularly used it both in my seminary studies and in sermon preparation. In fact, it has proven to be a most valuable tool in a sermon series that I am currently doing entitled, "Basic Doctrines of the Christian Faith."
Strong does a masterful job of explaining each Biblical doctrine in fairly simple language. In addition, he strongly supports each of those doctrines with the Scripture references from which they stem. Another strength of his work is that he makes generous use of the works of many other scholars both from his day and prior.
One area in which I thought he was weak was in his discussion of the doctrine of the Trinity. While I thought that he gave adequate attention to the doctrine overall, he pays scant attention to the person and work of the individual members. In all fairness, though, I have found that shortcoming in other works of systematic theology, too.
I thank the Lord Jesus Christ for Augustus Hopkins Strong and for the fact that I have had the privilege of adding his "Systematic Theology" to my library.
