C'est en vain qu'il reclame et le retour a l'ancienne religion, et le retablissement de l'Autel de la Victoire, symbole du paganisme comme religion civile. Tant sur le plan politique que sur le plan religieux, Symmaque fut l'homme des causes perdues. Il n'en etait pas moins un homme de plume: sa correspondance, qui occupe les quatre cinquiemes de son oeuvre, alterne les recits anodins et les plaidoyers vehements. A elle seule, elle constitue de passionnantes chroniques des derniers paiens . Notre edition rassemble en quatre volumes les dix livres de lettres transmises sous le nom de Symmaque.
