Published in 1937, twelve years before Orwell's 1984 , Swastika Night projects a totally male-controlled fascist world that has eliminated women as we know them. Women are breeders, kept as cattle, while men in this post-Hitlerian world are embittered automatons, fearful of all feelings, having abolished all history, education, creativity, books, and art. The plot centers on a "misfit" who asks, "How could this have happened?"

The author has taken Nazi Germany of the 1930's and extrapolated it 700 years into the future. This makes for a very good, of sometimes annoyingly didactic, story. Swastika Night has been regarded as something of a precursor to Orwell's "1984," but I don't find any interesting parallels. It's also seen as a pioneering work of feminist fiction, which it may in some respects be, but it seems to me that the author intended it more as a 20th-century Christian tract. In the end, the fate of humanity is put into the hands of a group of impoverished English Christians who are ignored, as inconsequential, by the Nazi rulers of the day.
