Women's surfing is booming as never before. Where once girls were content to watch surfing from the beach, they are now getting out there in ever-increasing numbers. There are 180,000 female surfers in Australia and more than 162,000 girls went to surf school. Louise Southerden, surfer and former editor of "Waves SurfGirl" presents this guide for women surfers in a style which is energetic and inspiring, rather than patronizing. Surfing is different for women and most surf books don't acknowledge that. Women tend to surf with different styles of board, have to deal with a fair amount of harassment and aren't cocooned by the same kind of industry as the blokes. For example, it is only in recent years that there have been surfing clothes for women, despite the fact that the first person EVER to stand on a board in Australia, in 1915, was a 15 year-old girl called Isabel Letham. And she went on to surf until close to the end of her 95-year life. The guide tells a girl everything she needs to get started. The history of the women who have surfed before her provides inspiration, but most of the advice is practical: how to choose the right board, what to wear, how to find the best waves, how to avoid dangers like sharks and rips. There are explanations of different kinds of breaks, surfing etiquette and, once you are up on your board, how to make the more advanced manoeuvres.
