The seventh volume of the Boredoms' between-album Super Roots project is one of the Japanese band's finest releases, and possibly its most accessible. The lengthy original track "7" is a radically expanded instrumental cover of the Mekons' "Where Were You" with two remixes serving as bookends. Though a 34-minute EP based around a single brief punk song seems ridiculous, Boredoms pull it off with widely varying sounds and textures. The original track begins by following the structure of the anthemic Mekons song closely, then slides into hypnotic motorik rock inspired by Neu! before abruptly shifting into Stooges-style thrash, and then fading out on woozy, downcast note. The two remixes are comparatively tame but no less interesting, with gurgling electronics and slow, choppy beats. Because they are blended seamlessly with the original track, this EP has the feel of one long piece.
