Drummer Mike Clark knows the jazz drumming lexicon and is carrying on the true tradition with his fiery playing. On Summertime he features Billy Childs on piano, Chris Potter and Bob Sheppard on saxophones, James Genus and Robert Hurst on bass, and Jack Walrath on trumpet. Nine songs by several jazz masters comprise the program, including three Wayne Shorter songs and two compositions written by pianist Jeff Pittson. Mike Clark is sensational on the opening track, "Brujo." Clark queues it up and sax master Chris Potter takes over with a dynamic solo on soprano saxophone that takes you to the edge of the song's destiny compliments of his stellar improvising. Billy Childs is smoking on his solo and brings a solid groove that testifies to his many years of playing with Mike Clark. The funk master now shows that he is a jazz master on this track with his great Krupa-style drumming that is wide open, intense, and just outright brilliant. One of the best bets on this set is the opening track, "Summertime," for the new rendition that literally snags you from the first note. ~ Paula Edelstein, Rovi
