One of at least three Sidney Bechet compilations bearing the title Summertime, this 1999 Giants of Jazz release opens with most of the titles from Bechet's first recording session as a leader (September 15, 1932) then scrambles the chronology by hopping around in the '30s sampling Bechet's best work in collaboration with trumpeter Tommy Ladnier, as a member of Noble Sissle's Swingsters and Jelly Roll Morton's New Orleans Jazzmen, and as leader of his own ensembles including the New Orleans Feetwarmers, a Blue Note quartet and quintet as well as a marvelous six-piece band featuring Texas-born Mexican American baritone saxophonist Ernie Caceres. Vocals are by bassist Wilson Myers (on "Shag" and "I Want You Tonight"), Billy Maxey ("Lay Your Racket") and Jelly Roll Morton ("Oh, Didn't He Ramble?" "I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say" and "Winin' Boy Blues"). Instrumental highlights range from the machine gun-like intensity of "Maple Leaf Rag" through the solid strata of "Really the Blues," "Weary Blues" and "High Society" to mood setters like "Indian Summer," "Jungle Drums," "Chant in the Night" and the awe-inspiring "Summertime." ~ arwulf arwulf, Rovi
