Suaeda is a mangrove halophyte commonly called as Sea-blites or Seepweeds. The genus comprises of about 75 species across the world, which is particularly dispersed in tropical countries. Available literature of "Suaeda" was surveyed rigorously to extract the information on pharmacological utilities and recent advancements in in vitro regeneration of Suaeda species. Unlike conventional crop plants, Suaeda is able to survive and reproduce in saline habitats, right from coastal regions, salt marshes, mudflats and inland deserts. Moreover, these species exhibit complex mechanism at physiological, cellular and molecular levels (viz. synthesis and expression of stress associated gene as well as accumulation of stress associated metabolites) enabling them to successfully cope with hostile conditions. These stress associated metabolites also evince sturdy and stiff anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, hepto-protective and anti-inflammatory activities and tend to be the key components in the prevention of assorted disease like (diabetes, cancer, chronic inflammation, cardiovascular malaises) and aging process.
