I shall probably hurt no man's self-complacency, if I say that the things and places of which I tell are matters concerning which the ideas of the vast majority of my country men are both hazy and fragmentary. But, none the less, the Peninsula and its sepia-coloured peeples are curious and worthy of attention, and therefore they deserve to be better known by the men of the race which has taken the destiny of the Malays of the/ Peninsula under its especial charge.
