There are cases in which it would be more advantageous from the standpoint of design and cost to employ special rolled sections, but, unless the quantity required be large enough to induce the manufacturer to make a special rolling of the section designed, the loss of time involved in obtaining the special section would outweigh the advantage gained in other respects. British Standard sections vary in cost per ton according to their proportion, shape, and size, and are quoted as basis, or so much extra above basis price. Basis price denotes the current market price for a certain section of mild steel; this price is ruled by many and varied factors relative to the industrial state of the country, and is quoted by the manufacturers from time to time. In the design of structural steelwork, regard must be paid to the relative cost of various sections, since there are many cases where ultimate cheapness may be effected by the adoption of sections for which the lower price per ton will more than justify the possible extra weight involved. A structure designed with the least amount of weight is not necessarily the cheapest ultimately. Uniformity of Sections. The number of different sections employed in a framed structure should be kept down to a minimum, even at the expense of a small addition in weight. To illustrate this statement, we may take, for example, an ordinary roof principal of 50-ft. span. The forces in the various members are different, except in a few cases, so that if each member is designed for exactly the permissible safe stress, the result is a roof principal composed of something like twelve different sections.
