R&S may already go down in history as Belgium's biggest and most influential techno label, but that doesn't mean that they're no longer concerned with releasing quality music. The second of their Straight From Vinyl series of mix CDs, local DJs Ed & Kim assemble a mix of Afro-jazz grooves that is more similar to the releases of German giant K7 than any of the tough and rugged techno that made R&S's name. This could be considered a shrewd marketing ploy, if only the CD wasn't of such high quality. Selections by Nightmares on Wax and Journey Man DJ are sample heavy trip-hop that, despite being typical, are never boring. Erot's "Two Songs for Annie" are centered around an unapologetic calypso steel-drum riff, while McMillan & Anderson use the tried-and-true disco string hook on "Latino Breaks." Fortunately, there are moments that break from the electronica easy listening mold. The Young Brothers & Vincenzini contribute the pulsing "The Scene Was" that switches back and fourth from latin grooves to acid mayhem, while the only new R&S release, Subsoundsystem's "Diggler," breaks the format completely with grotesquely distorted percussion and the super-sub-bass that is the label's hallmark. Looks like there might be some life left in the old dog. ~ Joshua Glazer, Rovi
