The island on which the city stands was swept by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico for six hours. Accompanied by a storm which lashed the whole Texas coast with terrible fury for sixteen hours, and even now the cause of the rising of the waters is but imperfectly understood. Its force was from sixty to one hundred miles an hour, and it would seem that their force was such as to drive the waters out to sea faster than they could ow in. But the ood came, and the island was cov ered to the depth of three feet in the highest places.and there the waters remained, though lashed to foam.
