Seller's Description:
No Jacket. Middlesex. 1960. Pelican/Penguin Books. 1st Pelican Paperback Edition. Very Good in Wrappers. 221 pages. paperback. A450. Cover photograph by Aerofilms Ltd. keywords: Stonehenge Archaeology Pelican. DESCRIPTION-During recent years notable advances have been made in British prehistoric archaeology, and in particular the understanding of Stonehenge itself has been much enlarged by excavations carried out since 1950 This book presents to the ordinary reader the results of research, reinterprets the findings of earlier excavators, and gives a comprehensive account of the monument and its significance within the wider framework of British prehistory. Each of the five sections into which the book is divided deals with a single aspect of the monument. The first describes the various structures, including those no longer visible on the surfaced, with the help of detailed plans and numerous photographs, many of them illustrating points of construction never previously recorded. The second gives the evidence for the sequence of building and the dates of the various phases; and the third discusses the techniques used for transporting, tooling, and erecting the stones. The fourth section surveys what is known of the various prehistoric communities which contributed to the buildings of Stonehenge; and the fifth, necessarily more speculative, attempts to interpret the monument in terms of changing religious beliefs and of social and political organization. An additional chapter summarizes the history of research and speculation on Stonehenge and its relation to the development of antiquarian thought in Britain, and the author has added a section on the most recent investigations of the site in 1956/7. inventory #36708.
Atkinson was involved as a young scientist in a 1950s dig at Stonehenge and later became the authority on the site. This book, written more for the lay public than for his peers, nonetheless gives an enormous amount of factual detail about the various discoveries and their archaeological significance. It is well worth getting for that alone since it brings many years work by a lot of people together in one place. The references are also given for the sources he quotes. Because little has been done since by way of digs at Stonhenge this work, despite its age, reflects much current belief too. The book was written before others suggested a more astronomical significance to stone circles and to Stonehenge in particular and of course these topics are not covered. Indeed we see in this book possible reasons for Atkinson's (and it has to be said, that of other archaeologists) strange and almost 'ostrich' attitude to such suggestions. A good reference for the layman and a good read too.
