This book is an outstanding collaboration between the author and the illustrator. Both the text and the art are memorable and the combination is beautiful and harmonious. This book is about work, a concept that is abstract and possibly intimidating to children. This book brings the story and drama of a huge industrial undertaking to a child in a manner that is engaging, educational and interesting and it does so without shirking the reality of the drudgery and hazards of work in a early 20th century steel mill.
I bought this book for my six year old grandson so that he would learn something of his heritage since two of his great-grandfathers were steel workers in the 1920s and 30s. I was amazed at how successful this book was in accomplishing this difficult goal.
I recommend this book to everyone, child and adult. It is educational for a child and respects a child's native intelligence by never "talking down" to them. For an adult, the text has the conceptual compression of poetry and the artwork is beautiful and moving, like a Rivera mural, but without the implied politics.
This is not just a book for kids--it is literature and art.
