Starclub made a brief splash with their 1993 single "Hard to Get," a tuneful ankle boot that tied a chiming '60s guitar line to Owen Vyse's soaring vocals. It was certainly in line with the rest of Brit-pop's second wave, and dented the U.S. charts for a moment. But, like the La's before them, Starclub couldn't keep it together beyond their self-titled debut, which itself couldn't sustain the single's charm for even half its duration. While "Call My Name" offered some flair with Byrds-style guitar and harmonies, and the name check of "Pretty Thing" was a ballsy move that backed up Vyse's newly-minted rock star preen, Starclub's debut didn't have much else to offer. Their turn into psychedelia for the blissed-out "World Keeps Turning" was propped up by its pomposity; like Vyse's persona, it demanded to be accepted simply because it sounded (or looked) like the '60s, not for supporting a list of cool references with anything truly notable. On top of all this was the band's leadenly obvious moniker. It suggested that the debut referenced the ragged, rave-up sound perfected by the Beatles at the Hamburg club, but instead, Starclub was in the habit of losing its way after a song's promising beginning. Nevertheless, this debut might be of interest to Brit-pop aficionados, since the band and "Hard to Get" have become one of the genre's more infamous one-hit wonders. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
