1997's Star is another in a long string of stellar E.P. releases by Primal Scream. The title track is taken from Vanishing Point and is one of the album's high points. The song is reminiscent of the band's watermark single, "Loaded"; it has the same loping beat and horns blasts (this time courtesy of the Memphis Horns). There is also some snaky melodica played by none other than the master himself, Augustus Pablo, and Bobby Gillespie's sincere, but still typically dorky lyrics. "Jesus" is a low-key ballad featuring drums by ex-Felt drummer Gary Ainge, and a heartfelt, singalong chorus. It also has the standard excellent keyboard work from Martin Duffy. Duffy doesn't get much credit, but he is a keyboard hero. "Rebel Dub" is an outer space dub version of "Star," with Pablo's melodica in the forefront. "How Does It Feel to Belong" is another late night, questioning ballad with a sad, subdued vocal by Gillespie, and fine guitar work that builds to a dramatic climax. Primal Scream always puts a lot of care and thought into their E.P. releases, and this is no exception. Find it if you can. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi
