Paul Schmeling is chairman of the Piano Department at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. Among other things, Schmeling has demonstrated different approaches to reharmonization (i.e., the substitution of new chords while improvising). Not much that is complicated or daring goes on in this tribute album to one of America's most prolific and popular songsmiths, Hoagy Carmichael, although Schmeling goes down a fascinating improvisational road on several cuts, including "I Get Along Without You Very Well." Here one can barely discern the melody after the first chorus as it peeks in and out through the extemporizational curtain Schmeling drapes around this tune. Since there is nothing all that heavy here, it would be easy to write off this album as a light or romantic jazz undertaking. This assessment would not only be incorrect, but unfair as well. While not as complex harmonically, this trio could play with some of Bill Evans' early groups without fear of being shut down. Schmeling, who has worked with Carol Sloane, Rebecca Parris, and Clark Terry, has a light, delicate touch that permeates each of the tunes on this set, including the up-tempo ones such as "Georgia," which the pianist gives a special spin. His version of "Stardust" shimmers like a sunlit country pond, barely rippling but moving nonetheless. There are at least two reasons for purchasing this album. First because of the timeliness of the play list and second because of the interpretive and technical skills of one Paul Schmeling. Schmeling is joined by John Repucci and Artie Cabral on bass and drums, but this is the piano player's show. Recommended. ~ Dave Nathan, Rovi
