In preparing the present treatise in an English form I have had in mind especially the large number of clergy to whom such a work in an accessible edition ought to be valuable; I have also hoped that it would appeal to a still larger public of educated and thinking laymen, who may be glad to read the ideas of so eminent a writer of an early age on the subject of the Christian Priesthood. I wish to acknowledge the kindness of Dr. Nairn, who has read through the whole of the present version in proof, and contributed many important improvements, and also my indebtedness to my colleague, Rev. B. F. Simpson, B.D., for valuable suggestions. I have adhered throughout to the text of Dr. Nairn (Cambridge University Press, 1906) and found his edition very useful. Since completing my version I have consulted the edition of Dean Stephens (Vol. IX. Nicene and Post-Niccne Fathers, New York, Christian Literature Co.) and incorporated several ideas from him. T.
