This recording, with the ubiquitous Louis Spohr and George Onslow, "the French Beethoven," certainly fills that role. But a few of them have gone beyond it to deliver bona fide lost masterpieces, and this is one. The unexpected find is the Piano Sonata in C minor, Op. 2, of Onslow. It was composed in 1807, and it's quite a bit like early-period Beethoven even if it's unclear whether Onslow, then 23, knew Beethoven's music well or not. Among his teachers were Dussek and Reicha, both of whom influenced Beethoven, so it may be a case in which he independently arrived at some of the same conclusions.
