This outstanding compilation by Father Faber is a must-have for the person seeking perfection. You will find chapters on kindness, self-deceit, death, wounded feelings, confidence, the monotony of piety, and reading as a help in the spiritual life. Fr. Faber was a convert, and an Oratorian with John Henry Cardinal Newman in England in the mid-1800s. Faber's writing style includes descriptions to excite the imagination, e.g., (on wounded feelings,) "The proofs of the unkindness of others are overwhelming....The excitement burns our judgment into us, as the fire anneals the porcelain and fixes the patterns and the colors....We have dropped a mere word of bitterness, and it clings like a stain to the poor offender for life. It maims his power of doing good. It throws a shadow over his sunshine. .....We must work day and night, as men do on the railway when a bridge has broken down...All traffic between heaven and ourselves is interrupted till we have got the ruin out of the way.......It is easier to cut out a cancer than to disengage from the heart a misunderstanding which has once had time to harden there....." The thin-skinned, sensitive man may need this book most, but be least likely to want to read it! But if you aspire to advancing in holiness, this book is a great guide. I recommend Fr. Faber. His Growth in Holiness and All for Jesus are also outstanding. Last thing, I appreciate his notes along the way that address the hardships of the priesthood and give encouragements there, tho' it is written in a way priests or laymen would find application. God be with you.
