This book is part of Alan Steele's Coyote world. No one writes better plot or conflict than Steele, in my opinion. He also does an amazing job of world building, and always manages to build in some interesting themes with contemporary echoes, as all good SF should. I loved the three previous books set in this world, and this one takes place at the same time (sort of - have to read the book!) with a set of characters who show up at the end of the third book. It stands alone just fine - but if you read this, you'll definitely want to get the rest of the books in the series.

A new novel in the universe of Coyote
SPINDRIFT is a novel in Allen Steele's universe of Coyote, a planet settled by a group of dissidents and their families who fled a repressive government on Earth. The story opens in 2288 when Europe's first starship,Galileo, launches on its maiden voyage to investigate an unidentified object, code-named SPINDRIFT, which is traveling outside the solar system. Galileo disappears. In 2344 the Galileo's shuttle returns with three survivors of the expedition. The shuttle has been retrofitted with an advanced drive system and the survivors are the same age as when they left on the voyage. They report that they have made contact with an extraterrestrial race and have been shown the most destructive force in the galaxy. Steele maintains the high standard of writing that has characterized the Coyote books. This book is recommended to anyone who has read the Coyote Trilogy.
