Robert Service was in the Yukon when he wrote such tales as The Spell of the Yukon; The Cremation of Sam McGee and the Shooting of Dan McGrew. No one does it better when it comes to story poems like the Ballad of Blasphemous Bill, the Ballad of Hard Luck Henry or Clancy of the Mounted Police. I might also mention that in the 1960's two different musical artists, Hank Snow and Stuart Hamblen put out albums both titled The Spell of the Yukon with recitations of Robert W. Service's work; and both of them are great. I have them. Mr. Service, I believe, is under appreciated today. Few know his name, but it was not always so, as he ranked with Jack London in the early part of the twentieth century.
